A friend recommended to me a Colleen Hoover novel and I managed to get through it but just barely. After I finished it I left it in a little lending library to pass the curse off to someone else.

Honestly, with how poor reading numbers are nowadays, I’d be happy if the people I know even read a book at all.

The average American reads 0.26 hours on a weekday, and 0.24 hours on a weekend or holiday. And that’s all sorts of reading for personal interest – includes print books, newspapers, digital magazines, etc, etc. And I know you guys here on r/books drag up the average for everybody else a lot.

I had a friend who would brag about what a bookworm she was. I asked her for a recommendation. Her top recommendation was Diary of a Shopaholic. I went and got it from the library. You can guess…the rest of the story!

Yeah. I don’t mind if someone enjoys Fourth Wing; it’s not for me but I enjoy plenty of trashy horror. But the number of people who suggested it to me as an amazing, epic story, and the next Game of Thrones (dragons and sex, I guess), really makes me wonder what they’re thinking.

A book they recommend is one thing, but a friend asked me to read an ARC of her first novel…and it was the first time I think I should have asked for a content warning. Also I am scared of spending time alone with her now..

My friend insisted that I give Game of Thrones a second chance. She got rather upset when I didn’t like it for the same reasons I didn’t like it the first time

I was recommended Sea of Tranquility (along with seeing the reddit hype) and it was one of the worst books I’ve ever read, to the point I DNF’d it. Just atrocious writing.

Enjoy what you enjoy. Life is too short and there are too many books to waste your time on books you don’t like just because they are critically regarded or considered classics.

This actually happened to me with an ex and a friend. I read a lot and so I’ve become quite picky over the years. If I don’t like the first pages or the summary I just don’t give it a go. But if a friend recommends a book, I give it my attention.
One friend recommended Sarah J Maas and the ex recommended Bernard Werber (don’t even remember his last name correctly). Two of the worst reads of my life. I can’t quite look at them the same way.
