Her husband used to work offshore in the oil field, but retired early. She used to read when he was out of town, but lately can only read when he's busy playing video games. She's coming to stay with me while she gets herself mentally prepared to re-enter the world as a single woman.

As I said, she's a huge fan of the period of Jane Eyre, and loves the author Charlotte Bronte. We like polar opposite books and movies, so I haven't a clue what to get her. Oh, she is also a super fan of Anne Rice, and has read the book Little Women a million times (to give you a better idea of what she's into).

Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. The Jane Eyre story told from the perspective of the woman in the attic.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield! Perfect for a Jane Eyre fan.

I second Middlemarch. Also Elizabeth Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters, North and South, and Cranford. She might also like Dr Thorne by Trollope

Not quite what you ask in terms of period, but she might like The Eyre Affair by Fforde, which has literary detective Thursday Next pursue a master criminal through the pages of the book Jane Eyre.

Daphne Du Maurier is a great middle ground of Jane Austen and Anne Rice!

Jamaica Inn and Rebecca were great

    7. Maybe try “The Other Bennet Sister” by Hadlow. It was written in 2020, but is a retelling of the events of Pride and Prejudice and afterward from Lizzy’s sister Mary’s perspective (bonus: they recently made it into a show on BCC [episodes still coming out] which is also quite good).
