I’ve only recently started reading regularly again, so I don’t have a huge reference pool yet, but these are the books I’ve loved so far:
- Roadside Picnic
- Solaris
- House of Leaves
- The Road
What I liked about them was the bleak/existential atmosphere, psychologically unsettling tone, hostile or unknowable environments, and the feeling of isolation and ambiguity.
I’ve been considering Metro 2033, Annihilation, or Blood Meridian next, but I’d love to hear other recommendations from people with similar taste.
I’ve got a long flight coming up, so I’m looking for something immersive that really sticks with you.
Thanks!

If you liked The Road and have a long flight coming up, I recommend The Stand by Stephen King.
Man, I love the books you listed. Here’s some of my favorites that fit your request.
Blindsight – Peter Watts
There is no Anti-Mimetics Division – QNTM
Piranesi – Susanna Clarke
The Luminous Dead – Caitlin Starling
Cage of Souls – Adrian Tchaikovsky
The Mountain in the Sea – Ray Nayler
You really should read Blood Meridian and Annihilation (and don’t feel obligated to read the rest of the Southern Reach).
