    Hi,

I’ve realised that whilst I like elements of fantasy I only really like books where the fantasy feels accessible and the plot is more of a mystery or a whodunnit (like Harry Potter), I was wondering if anyone has good recommendations of books or series where it’s set in a fantastical setting but has strong mystery plotting? Not hugely into pages of world building or political fantasy just ones that feel like a detective book if that makes any sense!

    1. Guards, Guards by Terry Pratchett. The police force of a large, multispecies city investigates a series of missing persons cases and melted architecture. Subversive, heartwarming and very funny with awesome characters. And the sequels just get better.

The shadow of the leviathan series by Robert Jackson Bennet. Two books so far, ‘the tainted cup’ and, ‘a drop of corruption’. Is a fantasy world that feels big, but the story’s are smaller scale mysteries with a Sherlock Holmes vibe (while following Watson). Each book is it’s own mystery so there no cliff hangers. I enjoyed them a lot.

Also the witness for the dead by Katherine addison. It’s a spin off series, so there were a few elements that were confusing having not read the core books (which aren’t mystery), and I think there’s a second one of those too. If I keep up with this series I’ll do the main books first to get a better idea of the world, so maybe not the nest fit.

      Keen to hear others recommendations.

The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. Protagonist is a noir-ish wizard detective in an AU urban-fantasy Chicago.
