I guess I’m wondering if there’s a book that explains what the modern music industry is really like, from trying to get people to listen to your first songs, all the way to beyonce and Taylor swift levels of success. I mean explain how life for people in different stages of their careers is like, if there’s mental health problems related to trying to “make it” in this day and age because of the constant fight to get your music heard in a vast ocean of amazing artists that all use social media to their advantage with various levels of success.
I’d like to know if the fact that older gen z and young millennials that try to get their music out there, have to use social media a lot, has a negative impact on their mental health?
I’d also like to know how the landscape changes between countries? Are people from Africa able to make a living with music? How successful can they get? How about people from Russia? Or people from Costa Rica, or Mexico? How difficult does it become then, to reach the dream of making music for a living when you’re living in a country that isn’t an epicenter for music exports?
I also wonder if there’s a book that tells the reader whether pursuing a career in music in this day and age, is even a dream, or if it’s a nightmare disguised as a dream through the portrayal of glamour in media? Cause let’s be real, suicide and drug abuse aren’t strangers to the music industry, yet almost everyone would love to be a rockstar. How do successful artists that have kept their lives as healthy as possible, have done it?
Lastly, I’d like to know why it is so hard to make a living through music, meaning making your own music for your own project, when the music industry is one of the most profitable industries in the world, and music is consumed by pretty much all people in the world. I mean, show productions and music shows of all sizes employ probably thousands of people around the world, so… why is it so hard to break through even when an artist makes great music? For example, Avenue Beat, the girls behind the viral-ish hit F2020 have only 200k monthly listeners on Spotify, even though their music is great. This is just one example out of thousands if not millions of other artists that make amazing high quality music, yet they barely have an audience, or sometimes not even that, and they have to change careers.
Why is it so hard for people to do what they enjoy most for a living?
Is there a book that touches upon these subjects?
Thanks!
