My father retired recently. He’s 65 and pretty open minded, but not into gore or lewdness for its own sake.
He cut his teeth on Asimov, Clive Cussler and Tolkien, so he’s into the genres. But now he’s looking for short stories or quicker, weekend reads that don’t feel long.
Any suggestions welcome. He’s having some trouble filling the time and he’s enough like me, for me to know he doesn’t need to be bored at night with his thoughts after his wife is sound asleep, so I’m trying to help out!

Martha Wells’ *Murderbot Diaries* series of sci-fi novellas; he’ll thank you. The first one is **All Systems Red**. I will say this for them, each succeeding one in the series is better than the one before it.
Has he read The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers? She also has a few excellent novellas, but I’m partial to full novels 🙂
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is an incredible read. It’s only about 200 pages I think. It’s a historical fiction book about a group of men in Vietnam and it goes back and forth of stories in the war, after the war, and before. It doesn’t have any gore really and it a good read for anyone who likes any historical fiction.
