It really depends on the series. Some are meant to be read out of order, such as Wayfarers by Becky Chambers, the Hainish Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin, or the Culture series by Iain M. Banks. Some aren’t meant to be read out of order, but totally work, such as the Halting State series by Charles Stross, or the Firefall series by Peter Watts.
Most series, in my experience, you will get the most out of them if you read them in order. What I usually do is check the library to see if they have the other books in a series that I’m missing, or if I have the earlier books and not the later ones, buy ebook copies of the later books as you can sometimes find very good deals.
I have bought some later books in a series without realizing. I had planned to ask in a genre-specific subreddit such as /r/printSF if anyone knew if they could be read on their own.
I plan on reading book 3 in the Cemetery of Forgotten books series after book 1 just to experiment with it with a series I don’t feel very invested in despite loving book 1.
The baroque cycle by Neal Stephenson. I started with The Confusion and I was indeed confused
