Five years ago I would have said Martha Wells! Then Murderbot happened… I’m so happy for her.
William Steig is a children’s writer, and his books are so close to my heart that I hesitate to recommend them to people and I won’t loan out my copies. His picture books Amos & Boris and The Bad Island are so bizarre and whimsical. No picture book has ever been as batsh*t crazy as The Bad Island, I wouldn’t trust a child who didn’t like it. His books for older readers, The Good Thief and Dominic… I’ve never met anyone else who’s read them. They are perfect secrets.
