I remember back in middle school we had to read this book called Seedfolks, and there’s a point in the book I remember where an older white woman (?) is spying on her neighbors with binoculars and she sees a little girl planting seeds and somehow this older white woman thinks she’s doing something illegal? (Sorry I’m describing this off memory it may be off). We had this discussion about whether or not the woman is racist, back then and even now I still believe she is a nosy racist, because why would ur first thought seeing a little (African American?) girl doing something be that she is planting and growing some sort of drug. She goes as far as accidentally destroying the bean plant when she goes down to investigate I think. My teacher at the time was an older white woman, who argued that the character was not a racist because of her experience and whatever but honestly I think she just sympathized for the character. I’m wondering how everyone else views that scene, since me and my classmates all agreed the woman was racist and our teacher practically yelled at and scolded us for it.

The way people interpret that scene in “Seedfolks” can vary a lot. Some might see the woman’s suspicion as straight-up racism, thinking she’s jumping to conclusions about the little girl planting seeds. Others might think it’s more about the woman’s fears or biases, not necessarily because she’s racist, but because of the environment she’s in.
