Sorry if this is a confusing title haha. I recently read Yasunari Kawabata’s The Old Capital, and after finishing the book, I felt like I had lived in 1950s Kyoto for a year. His descriptions of the flora, walks through forests and festivals, and the turning of the seasons didn’t just feel like visual imagery to transport the reader to a different time and culture; I felt like I learned more about the protagonist from her interactions with these elements than I did from her interactions with other characters. I’m currently reading Snow Country (also by Kawabata), and I’m enjoying it, but it’s not quite the same. I suppose I’m not looking for an atmospheric, high concept/high drama novel (e.g., The Secret History or anything by Murakami), but something gentler, more slice-of-life, almost like watching a documentary. Would really appreciate your suggests!
EDIT: First time posting here, so not sure if I should tag this as a spoiler
