Books to read over an extended period of time

My (long distance) best friend is going through a tough time and I would like to buy us both the same book so that we can read it over a period of time and discuss perhaps after each chapter or each section. We both love reading, are very open to genres, and I think that having something to engage her frequently will help at least for now.
