Dealing with a difficult family situation and I need an audiobook to distract me so I can make it through my workday tomorrow. Hoping for something with enough going on that I have to pay a good amount of attention (for distraction reasons) but also something that would be ok to listen to while I’m collecting some scientific data at work.
I like fantasy and sci fi and speculative fiction. I don’t love heavy romance or books that are weird about women.
Appreciate any recommendations!

If you’re open to middle grade fantasy, I think [Nevermoor](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/51da4742-ca09-4638-9c93-f13440bff12b) by Jessica Townsend would be perfect. It’s my favorite series, and the audiobooks are excellent!
The doomsday book by Connie Willis is a sci-fi time travel classic, and it’s very chill about women. The audiobook is great. The first half of the book is well written, but slow paced enough that you don’t have to pay super close attention
Dungeon Crawler Carl
Fits your bill. Funny, a lot going on and a cat that talks by the end of chapter two.
All Systems Red by Martha Wells
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is a really easy, yet immersive and comforting read. Stands on it’s own but more in the series if you like her style.
Project by hail Mary ticks all boxes
The Deverry novels by Katherine Kerr – start with “Daggerspell”. I’ve been listening to them and absolutely love them. Warning: stereotypical fantasy series in that there are approximately 1 million books (or 20ish?)
I really enjoyed The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. I listened to it and it’s such a good thriller that I couldn’t stop listening.
