I’ve just gotten into reading, as a replacement for watching tv- that gives me headaches.
In terms of media, I very much enjoy something with high stakes and consequences, and imagine it will be the same for books. Something unpredictable with twists, and with little to no plot armour for the main characters, though I appreciate it’s not always possible to get away from it entirely. I like things that are quite intense and brutal. Sorry if I’m painting an awful picture of myself lol.
I’m actually quite flexible on the genre or setting. Any recommendations please?

There’s plenty of dark and fucked up novels, I find them a lot more grim and freaky than any movie or tv show. Stephen King is probably the most famous horror novelist, you probably know of his most famous works IT and The Shining. Also HP Lovecraft is one of the pioneers of horror stories, he was a pretty awful person though but I used to love his stories.
The one book that I had to put down because it gave me the heebie-jeebies was Misery by Stephen King.
Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier
It’s long but check out Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff! Lots of action, violence and high stakes.
