This comes up a lot so apologies. I just can’t seem to find a mystery/thriller that are remotely well written. Just DNF’d Beneath Devils Bridge because it just didn’t seem to have any personality. None of the characters felt fleshed out and it was just a series of, this happened, then this happens, ect. It’s seems really hard to find genuinely well written thrillers. No Sager, Hoover, or Ware please.

    Books I’ve enjoyed recently.
    The Girl on the Train
    Dark Places
    Night Film
    The Gone World

I read a lot of horror and speculative fiction and am a sucker for anything that falls into the small town creeps category but it’s not a necessity. I’m kind of looking for some kind of investigative element but not procedural. Also I don’t mind if it’s sci-fi, horror or just straight mystery. It’s more of a mood I’m looking for. Like imagine your favorite episode of x-files mashed up with True Detective and sprinkled with ground up Northern Exposure. Thanks guys.

    1. Every Dead Thing by John Connolly, maybe? It’s the first book in his Charlie Parker series. Mystery/Thriller with supernatural elements.

Since you liked The Girl on the Train, have you read the other books by Paula Hawkins?

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

    4. Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice – set in a small First Nations community in Northern Ontario.

Bad Cree by Jessica Johns is another good one, set in Vancouver and then a small Cree community in Alberta. This one is like spec-fic/literary horror
