I’ve never given romance or any of its iterations much consideration, but recently I’ve been incidentally inundated in some of the booktok phenoms. I kinda like ’em, but they’re cheesy. Recs for romantasy that is dark and/or gritty? Not YA, pls.

Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey is political intrigue in a fantasy version of medieval France. The viewpoint character is a professional masochist and this series is the reason I learned to plait my own whips.
