Erik Larson does a great job with narrative history. “The Devil in the White City” is probably his best known work, but he has a handful of other popular books.
Also, Jon Krakuer. “Into the Wild” was made into a movie; “Into Thin Air” and “Under the Banner of Heaven” are good too.

*Too Big to Fail* by Andrew Ross Sorkin. Follows several government officials and wall-street bigwigs during the 2008 financial crisis that led to the recession. It reads like a political drama.

Evicted by Matthew Desmond, a sociology book about poor families in Milwaukee during and after the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Very interesting (and heartbreaking) read.
