Looking for books similar to the story of a Fallout character?

I'm looking for book suggestions that resemble Randall Dean Clark, a.k.a "The Survivalist" from Fallout: New Vegas's Honest Hearts DLC's story. Former military, husband, and father. He gets out and practices his survival skills to calm his traumatized mind. Nuclear war breaks out and travels to find his family. Believing they are dead he continues to live in Zion Valley and adapts to surviving in post-apocalyptic world. Aiding and protecting people from the shadows. Maybe, I'm being to picky. I just loved listening to his journal entries. Thank you!
