That one was my gateway to Russian classics too! If you want another short and harrowing read, try One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. In general though, Tolsty is my favorite, and his long-short story The Death of Ivan Illych is a great place to start with him.
