Going to Japan and i love SFF as a genre (generally i lean a hair more fantasy than sci fi in my preferences) and am looking for a book to bring with me that has japanese roots! I accidentally read a book set in Costa Rica while I was there previously this year and it was so fun to be recognizing elements around me in the book!
Also FWIW i read Hard Boiled Wonderland and liked it but found it kind of laborious. Magical Realism is hit or miss for me. Some of my all time favorites are: The Fifth Season, Adulthood Rites, Cats Cradle, Anansi Boys, Call Me By Your Name, Saga (though I don't really wanna bring comics)

Julie Kagawa’s *Shadow of the Fox* trilogy
Maybe Dendera by Yuya Sato. It’s low fantasy, based on a Japanese myth. But less potential to recognize your surroundings with this one, depending on when/where you’re going, as it takes place on a wintry mountain.
