Books that have a similar style, that are witty, funny, romantic but NOT racy, and the plot preferably happens around the same time periode (recency).

      Elizabeth Gaskell – Cranford

      Thackeray – Vanity Fair

Georgette Heyer – Has a large back catalogue, Arabella, Venetia and The Grand Sophy are good places to start.

    2. Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian. Trust me on this. Also, Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke is my current obsession. It’s like if Jane Austen wrote an enormous fantasy book about magicians and fairies—the style and language is SO historically accurate and it’s super witty and funny. And one of the magicians is head-over-heels for his wife (so cute). It takes place 1806-1817, and it’s the perfect mix of breathtaking magic and those quintessential Regency vibes.
