Guards! Guards!

Going Postal. It’s delightful, introduces new characters so it’s ok if you haven’t read previous novels, and is late enough in the series that Pratchett’s writing is at its peak.

Good Omens or Guards! Guards!

Pyramids was my first.
Colour of Magic if you want to start at the very beginning and have pure fantasy
Wyrd Sisters if you like Shakepeare
Guards! Guards! If you like crime
Moving Pictures if you like movies
Small Gods if you like religion
Going Postal if you like scams
All of these are either standalone or the start of a series (although some characters make an appearance in other books)

I was not big on Douglas Adams, but love Tolkien.
If you like the atmosphere of dark mountain caves and the old forest with barrow wights and Willow Man I’d suggest the [Witches Series](https://www.goodreads.com/series/109517-discworld—witches) within a series. (Obviously, this is way sillier than anything Tolkien wrote). You don’t really have to read them all chronologically and I’d say the best ones are *Lords and Ladies* and *Carpe Jugulum*.
My absolute favourite is [Hogfather](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34532.Hogfather). Best villain in the whole pantheon, and Death’s granddaughter is also pretty cool. It’s a Christmas story though, so it’ll be a while before it’s seasonal.

Actually, if you really want to just dip a toe in… Read “Troll Bridge”. It’s a short story about an old barbarian hero looking for a troll to fight. You don’t need to know the lore, or the geography, or anything. The story captures a lot of the humor and underlying themes of the other books: not all of them, but a lot.

What did you struggle with? Perhaps that can help us suggest a good book
If you enjoyed HHGTG, then color of magic seems like a good fit – just start at the start.

I first listened to ‘colour of magic’ and ‘The light fantastic’ which I liked because I love fantasy books, before moving onto ‘Mort’ which I really enjoyed. TBH it was Mort that made me want to read more!
