Once an avid reader, often reading 2-3 books simultaneously, I have been unable to finish a book in nearly a decade. I'm sure this question has been asked a million times so feel free to link other questions if this is allowed, but am lookin for a book which ideally meets the following requirements:
- Fiction
- Genre: NOT romance (recent breakup, can't deal), dystopian ok, no full blow scifi. Anything else goes
- Length: short to medium
- Difficulty: Easy would be best
I really want something that sucks me in and I struggle to put down. I really miss that feeling.
A little about me if it helps: mid 40s newly single female, hopeless romantic and unfortunate corporate slave to support daily human need for food. Gamer, meditator, loner and excellent problem solving skills. Not a fan of kids but do I like pets 🙂
Any recommendations?

I just read John Scalzi’s Starter Villain and I think it fits your needs. I was in a similar position to you—I love reading but I’ve had a really hard time reading for the past few years.
Starter Villain is funny, fast-paced, and easy to read. I finished it in one day after months of not being able to finish any book. There’s no romance, really, and cats are a big part of the story.
I recommend you learn transcendental meditation (or something similar). If this isn’t what you’re currently doing. (It’s nothing like mindfulness or breath meditation) It used to be a real struggle for me to finish books, but since learning I’ve become a voracious reader!
Also, how about Suttree by Cormac McCarthy?
